If you are in the market for a pick-up truck in 2022, looking past the all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra would be a mistake. Ram has made a name for itself over the last few years due to some of the improvements they have made, but more and more drivers are turning to the Tundra as their choice for a full-size pickup.

Because we want to help you make the best-informed decision, we did the heavy lifting and compared the trucks we believe will be the dominant players in 2022. So which is the best truck to buy, the 2022 Toyota Tundra or the 2022 Ram 1500? Let us break it down.

Performance and Engine Comparison

Let’s start off with the most important thing drivers look for in a truck, the contents, and capabilities beneath the hood. The 2022 Toyota Tundra offers two engines:

  1. The i-FORCE 3.5L Twin-Turbo V6 produces 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.
  2. And the i-FORCE MAX 5L Twin Turbo Hybrid V6 creates 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque.

Both engines come standard with a 10-speed Electronically Controlled automatic Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i), sequential shift mode, and uphill/downhill shift logic. This combination makes for some amazing towing capabilities which we will compare later. If any brand on the market can be trusted with hybrid technology, it is definitely Toyota. They have been a leader in hybrid technology from the beginning and have perfected it over time. The hybrid V6 is perfect for those looking for additional performance and improved efficiency.

The Ram comes in 5 different engine variations depending on the trim level selected:

  1. 6L V6 24V VVT eTorque Engine (standard on most trim levels – 305 HP)
  2. 7L V8 HEMI® MDS VVT Engine (395 HP)
  3. 7L V8 HEMI® MDS VVT eTorque Engine
  4. 0L V6 Turbo Diesel Engine Gen 3
  5. 2L Supercharged HEMI® V8 SRT® Engine

While the Ram does have more available engines to choose from keep in mind each engine comes with an increased cost. The two engines you are going to most commonly find are options 1 and 2 from above. But you’ll notice from the comparison is that the Tundra actually offers more power when compared head to head:

  • i-FORCE 3.5L (Tundra) VS 3.6L (Ram): 389 HP vs 305 HP respectively. Tundra offers 84 more horsepower
  • i-FORCE 3.5L Hybrid (Tundra) VS 5.7L (Ram): 437 HP vs 395 HP respectively. Tundra offers 42 more horsepower

As a driver, if you value having extra power when needed then you are going to want to opt for the 2022 Toyota Tundra on engine performance alone.

Towing, Loading, and Off-roading

Apart from their spacious interiors and comfortable ride, a lot of people prefer trucks over other vehicle types because of their versatility. Namely the fact that you can both tow and haul items in the bed of the truck. Both the Tundra and Ram offer superb towing and payload capabilities. Max towing depends on what trim level and engine the truck is equipped with. We compared the base models of each brand to give an accurate comparison. But when equipped differently, these numbers could change.

The SR and Tradesman are the entry-level truck options for Toyota and Ram respectively. When comparing the two, the Tundra has a towing capacity of 8,300 lbs whereas the Ram only can tow 7,690 lbs. But in terms of payload, the Tundra offers up to 1,810 lbs and the Ram offers up to 2,320 lbs.

So while both trucks are comparable on the lowest trim levels, the Tundra really separates itself as you move up. Both Tundra and Ram offer a Limited trim level which is their highest and most expensive option. When comparing these, the towing capabilities are staggering when equipped with the standard engines:

– Tundra Limited: 11,120 lbs Max Towing

– Ram Limited: 8,060 lbs Max Towing

Tundra offers over 3,000 lbs of additional towing capability

Let’s get off the asphalt for a while. If you want to go off-road with the Tundra, you are in for a treat. The 2022 Tundra comes with an available TRD Off-road package for the Limited, SR5, and the 1974 models. This package comes with both suspension upgrades and visual candies. The TRD package includes 18-inch TRD wheels, the TRD off-road suspension and skid plates, mudguards, a TRD grill, and a TRD leather shift knob. As if that is not enough, the 4×4 models also come with electronic rear differential locks, Toyotas amazing crawl control, and the multi-terrain select option. When it comes to off-roading, Toyota is hard to beat.

The 2022 Ram offers the so-called “BackCountry Edition Package”. This package includes an off-road suspension system, an electronic rear differential with hill descent control, skid plates, and beefier all-terrain tires. The BackCountry edition also touches upon the bed of the truck and comes with a bed extender, adjustable bed tie-down hooks, and a spray-in bed liner.

The BackCountry package on the 2022 Ram seems to be more focused on making the Ram more durable and tough, while the Tundra shines and focuses on pure off-roading capabilities. But being a Toyota, toughness is always guaranteed.

Interior Features and Technology

We do not want to sound biased, but when it comes to new and exciting technology, Toyota is hard to beat. Featuring an 8 inch or a 14-inch (Best In Class) optional version of the touchscreen infotainment and control center that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2022 Tundra also features a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot and what matters most, is the entire system is highly responsive and without the annoying lag. It just works, as you would expect from a 2022 touchscreen control center.

Similar to Toyota, the 2022 Ram 1500 features either an 8.4-inch touchscreen with an available 12-inch upgrade (2-inches smaller than Tundra). As expected, the Ram also features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality and a mobile hotspot. However, prominent magazines like Car and Driver did report a lot of glitches and unresponsiveness of the touchscreen infotainment system. However, they did note that the Ram truck also offers several more physical buttons to hide the fact that the touchscreen is not up to par with the Toyota.

When it comes to interior quality and features both trucks offer a great experience. With premium-quality leather upholstery and soft-touch plastics, both trucks offer durable interiors with plenty of optional features such as ventilated seats, sunroofs, Toyota’s panoramic moonroof, and incredible sounding audio systems. Both trucks offer an interior you can easily spend hours inside without being uncomfortable.

Practicality

Pickup trucks were and still are the reigning champions of practicality. However, they are not just these rugged utility vehicles as they once were. They are comfortable, spacious, and full of modern entertainment and safety features. But at their core, the buyers of these vehicles still seek practicality and utility.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra not only comes with plenty of under-seat and in-floor storage it also offers incredible truck bed dimensions. The 2022 Toyota Tundra offers a 5.5, 6.5, or 8.1-foot truck bed based on the cab of your choosing. On the other side, the 2022 Ram 1500 features a 5’7’’ or a 6’4’’ sized truck bed. Both of these will carry incredible amounts of sporting gear, hunting equipment or building materials. However, Toyota takes the prize when it comes to practicality, especially with the 8.1-foot truck bed option.

Safety

Have you heard about the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5? No? We can’t blame you. The safety features on all modern cars have been developing at an incredible rate which is hard to follow. The 2022 Toyota Tundra comes standard with their new arrangement of safety systems called the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5. This system comes with all trim levels and includes the following: a dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, road sign assist, lane departure alert and lane tracing assist, a blind-spot monitor, a rear sir reminder feature and lastly an optional rear cross-traffic alert system.

The 2022 Ram 1500 is also not far behind, with its 360-degree surround-view camera and forward-collision warning system with active braking, both trucks in this comparison will make sure you and your family reach the destination in one piece. The 2022 Ram 1500 also features a lane assist system and blind-spot monitoring but does not come with nearly the amount of standard features that the Tundra does.

Conclusion: 2022 Toyota Tundra vs 2022 Ram 1500

While both trucks offer great features and functionality, the Tundra does pull ahead in many areas. From standard features, durability, and safety, the Toyota Tundra is a truck you will want to come test drive. And remember, every Toyota comes with ToyotaCare.
