Toyota TRD Trim Packages Explained
TRD shows up on a lot of Toyota trims these days, and it doesn't always mean the same thing. On a Tacoma, TRD Off-Road is a distinct trim you order. On a Tundra or Sequoia, it's a package added to other trims. And on a RAV4, it doesn't exist anymore at all. Here's how it actually breaks down, model by model.

Tacoma: the fullest TRD lineup Toyota offers
The Tacoma is really where you see the whole TRD spectrum play out, from mild to wild. At the bottom, is the TRD PreRunner. It's rear-wheel drive only, which sounds like a downgrade until you realize that's the point: it gets you the TRD look and some capability without paying for four-wheel drive you might not need. TRD Sport goes the other direction, leaning into on-road comfort with a hood scoop, 18-inch wheels, and tuning aimed more at the commute than the trail. TRD Off-Road is where things get serious. Standard 4WD, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, crawl control, and genuine trail hardware without a huge price jump. The TRD Pro sits on top of all of it, with a standard hybrid powertrain, FOX shocks, and 33-inch tires built for driving fast over rough terrain, not just crawling over it.
4Runner: almost the same lineup, plus one
The 4Runner's TRD trims track closely with the Tacoma's Sport for on-road manners, Off-Road for real capability but it adds one the Tacoma doesn't have: TRD Off-Road Premium. It's exactly what it sounds like. You keep the same locking differential and Bilstein shocks as the regular TRD Off-Road, but Toyota adds heated SofTex seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 360-degree camera on top. TRD Pro still sits at the summit with the most aggressive suspension and hardware in the lineup.
Tundra: TRD works differently here
This is where people get tripped up. On the Tundra, "TRD Off-Road" isn't its own trim it's a package you add on top of the SR5, Limited, Platinum, or 1794 Edition, bringing a locking rear differential, off-road suspension tuning, and Multi-Terrain Select with Crawl Control. TRD Pro, on the other hand, is a standalone trim and the real flagship: standard hybrid power, FOX internal bypass shocks, 18-inch BBS wheels, a factory lift, and styling you won't find anywhere else in the lineup.
Sequoia: same playbook as the Tundra
The Sequoia is built on the same platform as the Tundra, and its TRD lineup follows the same logic. TRD Off-Road is a package, not a trim, available on 4WD versions of trims like the SR5 and 1794 Edition. It adds a selectable locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, Downhill Assist Control, a Multi-Terrain Monitor camera system, and TRD-tuned Bilstein shocks and springs. TRD Pro is its own trim and the off-road flagship of the lineup, with FOX internal bypass coil-overs, rear remote-reservoir shocks, matte-black forged BBS wheels, an aluminum front skid plate, and an LED light bar in the heritage-style grille. Like every 2026 Sequoia, it runs on the i-FORCE MAX hybrid twin-turbo V6. Short version: if you need three rows and real trail capability, the Sequoia TRD Pro is the only Toyota that does both.
RAV4: no TRD trim anymore
If you've been RAV4 shopping and can't find a TRD Off-Road trim for 2026, that's not a mistake. Toyota dropped it in the redesign. It's been replaced by two trims that aren't TRD badges at all: Woodland, which covers the off-road/adventure role with standard AWD and all-terrain tires, and GR Sport, a new on-road performance trim tuned by Gazoo Racing, Toyota's other motorsports division, separate from TRD entirely.
FAQ
What does TRD actually stand for?
Toyota Racing Development is Toyota's in-house performance and off-road engineering group.
Which is more capable off-road, TRD Sport or TRD Off-Road?
TRD Off-Road, no contest. TRD Sport is built for on-road handling and looks; it skips the locking differential and off-road suspension that make TRD Off-Road genuinely trail-capable.
What do you get with TRD Off-Road Premium that you don't get with regular TRD Off-Road?
Comfort. Most of the off-road hardware is identical, but Premium adds heated seats and a 360-degree camera on top.
Is TRD Pro the most capable trim in every lineup?
Yes. Across the Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra, and Sequoia, TRD Pro is the most off-road-capable factory trim you can buy.
