The Toyota Prius is back with its 5th, and may we say most stylish, iteration in its 23-year production run. Since its debut in 2000, the Prius has reigned supreme in fuel economy and has earned the nameplate of the most fuel-efficient hybrid car for a number of those years. 2023 is no different with the new model having an estimated 57 combined MPG. Even with its eye-popping fuel economy, we expect shoppers will be most excited about the complete exterior overhaul. With a lower, wider, and longer body, the vehicle has a sporty, refined appearance that can double as a modern hot hatch or luxury four-door sedan. With these changes, drivers will enjoy a smoother driving experience with improved rigidity compared to previous models. On the inside, an all-new 12.3-inch infotainment screen is available to improve driver convenience and access to all the latest safety and entertainment features. To wrap it all up, the Prius remains a bargain with a starting price of $27,540.
Three trim levels will be available, all offering various points of value based on the owner’s needs. One important thing to note is that all trim levels will be offered in FWD and AWD drivetrains, with FWD getting slightly better gas mileage.
The lineup starts with the base model known as the LE (starting at $27,540). See the list below for the LE’s primary exterior, interior, and safety features.
The next step up is the XLE (starting at $30,895) which will add a handful of standard and optional features. Most notably:
The final and most luxurious trim level is the Limited (starting at $34,465). The Limited includes all XLE features plus the following:
As stated in the introduction, the 2023 Prius will have a best-to-date 57 combined MPG and is equipped with an 11.3-gallon fuel tank, giving owners just over 640 miles of range on a single tank. Drivers can utilize the ECO drive mode which automatically modulates the throttle to achieve maximum fuel economy. The lineup will house a single 2.0L Hybrid Gas/Electric Inline-Four engine with a 60% increase in horsepower year over year (121 hp vs. 196 hp). The engine will be mated to the previous models Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). Moreover, the battery pack has been improved by reducing the size and weight while increasing power output by 15%. With a more powerful engine, larger ventilated front brakes and solid rear brakes have been added for increased stopping power.
For those curious about Toyota’s Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) model, the Prius Prime, the battery size has been increased to improve the original 25 mile range to an estimated 40 miles. The Prime will also be equipped with solar panels, integrated into the roof to recharge the electric battery, and provide additional power to essential vehicle functions. As a note, the Prius Prime will retain all the features of the standard Prius but will have an added electric motor for purely electric driving. Trim-level names will also differ slightly with SE, XSE, and XSE Premium.
Key Points:
The exterior has been completely redesigned to reflect modern style cues, clearly apparent in the lighting design and aerodynamic body curves. A sweeping flow starts at the front of the vehicle and wraps back to the continuous taillight, flaunting a sleek and forward-looking appearance. The 2-inch shorter height and 1.5-inch wider rear track width make for a more aggressive stance. With a shorter height, you may initially expect to have less ground clearance, but the new model will surprisingly have an improved clearance of 5.6 inches (0.5 inches higher than 2022), meaning Minnesota drivers will have an easier time navigating snow-ridden roads. Lastly, six exterior colors will be available:
Key Points:
Beyond the exterior refresh, one of the most significant changes coming to the new Prius is the available 12.3-Inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen. This is integrated with all the vehicle’s essential media technology features such as infotainment, safety, and music streaming services. Like many of the vehicles made in recent years, the Prius will be Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible. Owners will also have the pleasure of receiving a complimentary 3-Month Sirius XM Platinum Plan Trial and a 1-year trial of Toyota’s Drive Connect, a connected service platform meant to enhance the driving experience through cloud navigation, live chat, and an on-demand voice command system.
Drivers can experience premium comfort with the available 8-way adjustable seat with lumbar support to ensure long drives are soothing and easy on the body. With comfort also comes safety and convenience. The color head-up display (HUD) allows drivers to keep their eyes on the road as a projection will appear on the lower windshield with pertinent information like speed, navigation, and hybrid system indicators.
With the changes to body proportions, passengers with longer legs can rejoice as there is an additional inch of leg and hip room, but this comes at the cost of less headroom due to the shorter design. Furthermore, there is plenty of cargo space thanks to the Prius’ hatchback design and fold-down rear passenger seats, offering up to 23.8 cubic feet of cargo volume.
Key Points:
All Prius trims will come standard with Toyota’s latest suite of safety and driver assistance features; Safety Sense 3.0.
The system was developed to help avoid all the uncertainties that drivers face on a daily basis, whether it be a pedestrian making a surprise appearance at a stop light or invisible road lines due to extreme weather conditions. Additionally, the Star Safety System is also standard with familiar features like Traction Control, Anti-Lock Brakes (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). Front cabin passengers also receive an additional layer of protection with the Advanced Airbag System.
