Toyota Teams Up with Ford for Hybrid Development

Though it might be hard for some to imagine the successful collaboration of two leading American and Japanese automakers, Toyota and Ford have put their differences aside to face the challenge head-on. It just so happens that the two market leviathans have the right complementary expertise to accomplish a mutual goal drivers will be able to appreciate worldwide - the development of a hybrid system for light trucks and SUVs.

While American automaker Ford brings to the table its extensive knowledge of trucks and SUVs, Toyota brings decades of experience working with hybrid technologies. Ford and the Oval T have signed a memorandum of understanding on the development of the hybrid system and are expected to enter a formal agreement by 2012. Both automakers are confident that fortifying their previously independent efforts to develop a rear-wheel drive hybrid system will significantly shorten the periods between design, production and launch.

In addition to a new rear-wheel drive hybrid system, Ford and Toyota have also agreed to co-develop the next-generation standards for in-car telematics and Internet-based services. Both companies aim to enhance the services' safety, convenience, and security. Takeshi Uchiyamada, Executive VP R&D for Toyota commented, saying "Our collaboration with Ford, is a move to make hybrid technology more widely available in sport-utility vehicles [SUVs] and in trucks...Those kinds of models are indispensable to American customers. And providing them with our hybrid technology will help conserve gas here in the United States. That was our thinking in considering the collaboration."

Derrick Kuzak, Group VP, Global Product Development for Ford commented on the collaboration of the two global leaders, saying "This agreement brings together the capability of two global leaders in hybrid vehicles and hybrid technology to develop a better solution more quickly and affordably for our customers...Ford achieved a breakthrough with the Ford Fusion Hybrid, and we intend to do this again for a new group of trucks and SUV buyers - customers we know very well."1
